Rolling Ranking ExplainedThe following are hypothetical examples from data used to calculate rolling ranking. Individual scores from each event are collated to calculate the match average and ranking for that event. The match averages and ranking for each event are then combined to calculate that individual's rolling ranking for that ranking period.
The two examples above show how rolling rankings are calculated. The tournament name abbreviations represent the event information as follows: AZ = Arizona Cup match average; M = # of matches shot; R = rank of match average in that event (this is for information only - not used in any calculations); TX = Texas Shootout; CRO = Croatian Grand Prix; GC = Gold Cup; WTT = World Target Team Trials; TUR = Turkish Grand Prix; WTC = World Target Championships; USO = U.S. Open; ATH = Athens Test Event; PAG = Pan Am Games; Overall AVG = the average of all matches shot by this person for all events listed; OA Rank = the rank of this person's overall match average in comparison to all other persons who have shot at least one match in at least one of the events listed; RR AVG = the rolling rank match average for this person during this ranking period, which uses the four (4) best averages of all events listed; Final Rank = the ranking of this person's rolling ranking average in comparison to the rolling ranking average of all other persons. The difference between Example 1 and Example 2 above is that in Example 1, Jane Doe has shot matches in eight (8) events and can pick the best four (4) to calculate her rolling ranking average. In Example 2, Jane Doe has only shot matches in three (3) events. Since we average the best four, a +1 is included in the denominator, which in effect gives her a zero for the missing event. Anyone having less that four (4) events will have this zero added to the calculation and will result in their rolling ranking average being lower than their actual average of all matches. The table above shows that Jane Doe shot 5 matches at the Arizona Cup and her average from those matches was 159.70 (Note: this is an 18-arrow match average. Any 12-arrow match scores that are shot are extrapolated to an 18-arrow score for the purposes of calculating this average). The 1 in the "R" column means that Jane's average ranked the highest of all female recurve shooters in this event (Note: Only U.S. archers are ranked). It is important to understand that when calculating the overall average and rolling ranking average, we do not "average the averages". As the formulas show, the average from each event is multiplied by the number of matches shot in that event and all of these are added together and divided by the total number of matches shot to get the final average. In the formulas listed above, AZ Avg. x Matches means that the 'average' value for Arizona Cup is multiplied by the number of matches shot in Arizona (159.70 X 5). The subsequent multiplications represent the other events in this ranking period. This gives you the total number of points scored (the numerator), which is then divided by the total number of matches shot (the denominator). The "rolling ranking average" is the primary ranking that is used by USA Archery and the U.S. Olympic Committee to determine the status of recurve archers in the United States. It determines who is eligible to receive stipends, attend Grand Prix events, receive training support (Gold Track camps, Resident Athlete Program eligibility, and Olympic Training Center privileges), and eligibility for Elite Athlete Health Insurance. The "overall average" is not used for anything other than informational purposes. It is basically a "raw" average of all matches shot by a person in the events listed. It is most useful for monitoring the progress of archers who have not yet shot four (4) events during a rolling ranking period. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
